The Bakongo people have been practicing Agriculture before 500 BCE., when they arrived in the area of the mouth of the Congo River. European voyagers described some of the land as kingdoms. The Kingdom of Loango was developed in the sixteenth century which controlled most of the north coast of the Congo region. The French and Belgians mostly colonized the Kongo region. Most kingdoms were made or became a kingdom in 1930. he Kongo kingdom was believed to be made around the year 1390. The Portugal arrived in kongo kingdom in 1483. Portugal noble quickly converted Christianity. The kongo kingdom was turned into a christian kingdom around 1485. The Bakongo people were invaded by a group of African warriors which the Portugal called the Jagas in 1568. Bakongo people were defenseless, had no other choice, but to ask the Portugal for help. The Portugal had the liberty to build a colony in Angola on their territory. In 1622 the Portuguese had a failed invasion on the Congo. the reason behind the invasion was because their alliance just wasn't cooperative anymore. In 1641 Kongo applied alliance with the Dutch to fight the Portuguese. The Portuguese ended beating the Dutch which led to the Battle of Mbwila. The Portuguese defeated the Kongo in Angola. Finally the Kongo people defeated the Portuguese invasion, but a civil war began in Kongo in 1670, so regional power was never gained and was prevented. They became independent around 1960. |
